With
the uncertainty of today’s economy, there isn’t much guarantee for job security
anymore; the more reason companies are outsourcing their positions to cut
costs. Being indispensable at work means the productivity of your organisation
depends on you, in other words, you are a can’t do without, which also puts you
in a beautiful comfort zone. Today’s post will be showing some of the ways to
becoming indispensable at work.
1. Going
extra mile: being able to do a little more than expected, that is, above or
beyond your job description gives you a competitive advantage and at the same
time makes you indispensable. You become that person that is known for doing
more than expected.
2. Think
outside the box to save your company money: you can do this by carrying out
personal research to find out some ways to help your company reduce some of
their costs, by finding cheap alternatives to help your company run effectively
and efficiently.
3. Be
more productive: proactively accomplish your tasks during the day. It doesn’t
mean you should look for short cuts, rather it means you are thorough,
professional and fair in all your dealings.
4. No
man is an island, so build relationships: don’t be self-absorbed. Make more
connections, build and nurture relationships with people who are key decision makers,
because they’re key important part of your career journey. If you want to build
strong work relationships, be a good listener, good communicator and more
empathetic towards your colleagues.
5. Treat
everyone with respect: being genuinely
respectful can impact positively on your career more than you can imagine. It is
not just about doing your job well, but it is about how you treat your peers,
your colleagues and clients. Apply the golden rule-do to others what you would
love them to do to you.
6. Prioritise
your work-do what really matters: Don’t shy away from difficult tasks. Stand out
by doing the work that matters not just the easy ones. Don’t try flying under the
boss’s radar by just doing tasks at work to stay busy to pass the time.
7. Stand
out by monopolizing a particular skill: try finding out task that is not assigned to anyone and take full ownership
of that task, you may end up becoming the only one who knows that particular
skill. Example, it could be when a new initiative is created that needs a
particular skill which your organisation has never had before, or when a
colleague leaves who has a unique skill
and you step in their place.
8. Be
a solution provider: if everyone else is complaining, stand out and offer
solutions. Be known for it. Everyone loves hanging out with a problem solver. Before
long, you will become the centre point for all solution and decision making.
If
you’re ambitious and you take pride in your work like I do, try working your
way to being indispensable, because you will be able to enjoy your job more
knowing how valuable you are.
